There is plenty to explore with ancient woodlands and well-marked footpaths available from the front door and for keen cyclists, there is access onto the National Cycle trail with route 42 and plenty of local mountain biking. Visit one of the many vibrant market towns, the closest being Monmouth with its ancient bridge and independent shops, and slightly further Chepstow, Abergavenny and Crickhowell, all steeped in history. The area is full of Norman castles and ancient abbeys such as the nearby Tintern Abbey, Raglan Castle, White Castle and Grosmont. There’s the Forest of Dean where you can explore not just ancient woods but nature reserves and deep caves, and the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains where you can enjoy mountain climbs, waterfalls and the River Wye.

Sitting in the grounds of a working farm this cottage offers an ideal space for friends and family to get together. It is architect-designed and beautifully decorated like a home from home with many books and pictures. There’s an outside porch, and inside a spacious hallway with stone tiled floor and a delightful bench, where you can kick off muddy boots and hang coats before you head into the kitchen. Off this hallway is also a cupboard with washing machine and tumble dryer, and a separate WC. Next, step into a stunning kitchen/dining space, a large L-shaped room with a wood burner where you can relax and enjoy a glass of wine, a dining area with large table and chairs to accommodate eight guests with huge windows onto the garden and woodlands, and the kitchen area too. The kitchen is well-equipped with electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and dishwasher, as well as lovely touches such as cookery books, and a hatch through to the lounge with shutters. In the lounge, there is also a wood burner, and the room has two seating areas, one for relaxing in in front of the Smart TV and another for reading or chatting in front of the fire. It is very bright and sunny with three south-facing windows. On the ground floor is also the biggest bedroom, with two huge windows onto the garden, and a super-king-size zip-and-link bed (which can be made into a twin on request) with en-suite bathroom with shower over the bath, and WC. Climb the stairs to a further three bedrooms, one super-king-size zip-and-link (which can be made into a twin on request) with stunning south-facing views, one double bedroom with the same views, and one king-size room looking over the garden and woodland. There is a bathroom with claw-foot bath and WC, and a separate shower room with shower and WC.

Outside is a spacious enclosed garden with table and chairs on the grass for summer dining, an alternative table and chairs near the house for dining, a charcoal BBQ and a chimenea to gather around on winter nights. The garden is backed by woodland where you might see deer (including an albino deer that roams the estate), woodpeckers and owls. There is 270 acres of farmland and storage for bikes.

Lovely peaceful location within easy reach of places to visit. Great for walking. Beautifully decorated and cosy. We didn't use the lovely sitting room much though as dogs were not allowed in there. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the lodge. The house and garden were perfect for our needs and the children loved the constant exposure to all the farm animals and the dogs that would welcome us back after every outing. The only downside was the bumpy road leading up to the house however we were forewarned and were expecting it.
