Things to do in Wales

Around the coast and countryside as well as the stunning mountain ranges that are apparent in the country, there is so much to do for everyone during your holiday in Wales. That’s before we even mention the great city locations!

The coast:

The opening of the Wales coast path in 2012 means that this beautifully diverse area can be explored with ease as the path itself is the world’s first uninterrupted coastal path. Along the 870 mile long path you are able to explore the various coastal towns and fishing villages and the beautiful beaches in this area as well as woodlands and historic castles. For adrenaline junkies, coasteering is an activity that you will love as you traverse rocky inlets and explore the coast from an up close perspective. The aforementioned beaches are apparent in every region of Wales, from Barmouth in North Wales to Rhossili Bay in South Wales and Penbryn and Barafundle Bay in between. Of course, many of the beaches in Wales are great for water sports and there are many surf schools and activity centres throughout the country where lessons are available for the whole family. They are also dog-friendly so you are able to bring the pooch too!

The country:

In contrast to the array of things to do along the coast, Wales also has abundance of countryside activities available. Walking is a great activity during your holiday in Wales and you will find a wide selection of walking routes throughout the country, including the national trails, Offa’s Dyke, Glyndwrs Way, and the Pembrokeshire coast path. In the north of the country is where you will be able to explore the Snowdonia National Park which has walks suitable for all abilities whether you are a seasoned hiker or prefer a scenic ramble and breath-taking views. Similarly, in Mid Wales and into southern Wales the Brecon Beacons offers visitors spectacular walking routes and other natural beauty spots during the day and night. There are also waterfalls to explore as well as quaint market towns offering local produce and great hospitality. The Cambrian Mountains are also location in the northern part of Mid Wales.

The attractions:

Attractions such as the National Botanic Garden of Wales in Carmarthenshire offer great family days out and King Arthurs Labyrinth close to the village of Corris means that families are able to explore the legend of King Arthur in North Wales. The country is often referred to as the ‘Land of Castles’ and it is a sentiment that is deserved. Throughout the country there are many historic settlements such as Raglan Castle in the Vale of Usk, Dinefwr Park and Castle and Laugharne Castle in Carmarthenshire, Caernarfon Castle in Snowdonia, Caerphilly Castle, and Conwy Castle in Conwy which all enable you to step back in time during your visit.

There are also many fantastic free attractions in Wales, meaning that your holiday in the country doesn’t have to cost the earth and also, you don’t have to sacrifice a great day out! To discover a little more about the Welsh heritage past and present during your break in the country, head to one of the seven national museums that are located throughout Wales. A number of free events also take place throughout Wales, such as the Cardiff Summer Festival which is one of the UK’s largest outdoor festivals featuring a variety of acts and performances. Alongside these, it is also possible to visit some other historic locations for free in Wales like the Margam Country Park and St David’s Cathedral, both of which are stunning and free to enter.

The cities:

The major cities in Wales, namely Bangor, Cardiff, and Swansea enable visitors to experience the full offering of a holiday in Wales. The capital of Wales, Cardiff, has great shopping, a wonderful history to explore as well as lively entertainment in the evenings and many events taking place throughout the year.
