This pretty market town is situated in the upper reaches of the gorgeous Severn Valley in rural Mid Wales. With weekly famer markets and boasting the biggest sheep market in Europe, this quaint traditional welsh town, surrounded by rolling hills and unspoilt countryside is perfect for a peaceful and relaxed holiday.

Welshpool is close to the border between Wales and England and is the ideal base to explore the surrounding hillsides and attractions close to the borderlands. Welshpool contains a wealth of history, and the castles and fortifications across the area are a delight to discover. Powis Castle is within walking distance of the town and is one of the best preserved castles in Wales and the ruins of the 13th century Montgomery Castle boast impressive views of the Severn Valley. Four miles outside of Welshpool, the Greek Revival House is perfect for a day out and set within 25 acres of gorgeous gardens. Across the Welsh countryside and along the border to England there are a string of castles to admire and explore.

Scenic countryside spanning the area offers many rural and country pursuits including superb walking trails, cycling, horse-riding, quad trekking or relaxed wildlife spotting. There are two national trails close to the town, Offa’s Dyke and Glyndwr’s Way which provide interesting terrain and attractive sights to see. Walk though patchworks of fields, over ridges, across flowing rivers and lush plains.

With Mid Wales becoming increasingly recognised as a centre of excellence for the Arts and Culture, there are numerous galleries and museums to be found in and around Welshpool. You may be fortunate enough to meet makers and designers on your visit and take home some quality handmade souvenirs. For a spot of retail therapy, narrow lanes link the main streets in the town and are charming to stroll. Browse independent shops and boutiques or pop into a local delicatessen or welcoming pub for a bite to eat. There is also the Towns Heritage Trail which highlights the long and colourful past of the town, features and buildings with rich historical ties, ready to be meandered and discovered.

Summer festivities in the town kick off in May with the traditional Welshpool Carnival where a parade of colourful floats swoop through the centre and fun and games on the Recreation Fields are held to entertain. If you are planning a cosy Christmas break, the Welshpool Winter Festival shows the streets coming alive with music, market stalls and festive cheer.
