Perfectly situated just a stones through from Wales’ capital city Cardiff and bordering the picturesque Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons, Newport is a fascinating destination from which to enjoy a UK break. The city is often the first place that visitors to Wales will come across due to its proximity with The Severn Bridge and is well worth a visit, whether that is for a day trip or a holiday.

The city is steeped in history with strong links to the Celts and Romans while playing a major role in the industrial revolution being the largest coal-exporting port in Wales. The National Roman Legion Museum is located in Caerleon and you can discover what a force the Roman Empire was while walking through the remains of a fortress complete with Roman Gardens, a must visit while on holiday in Newport.

The River Usk has been central to much of Newport’s development as a city and has plenty to see and do along its banks and on the water this present day. Newport Ship, which is thought to be from medieval times, was found in the banks of the river in 2002 and is displayed regularly throughout the year with a permanent exhibition at Newport Museum & Art Gallery. Get a stunning view of the city from atop Newport Transporter Bridge one of only six remaining operational transporter bridges in the world.

Celtic Manor hosted the Ryder Cup in 2014 and is a must visit for anyone with an interest in golf. Test yourself on one of the three courses that are found on site, if you want to follow in the footsteps of the best golfers in the world be sure to play The Twenty Ten Course. For those that prefer to take their walks without carrying golf clubs, then head to the Usk Valley where there are a series of walks situated on the edge of the city. Leading all the way to the Brecon Beacons the route will reward you with some of the most beautiful sights in the whole of Wales, all part of a Newport holiday.

Newport City centre is thriving with life both throughout the day and at night. There is a café culture feel during the day with plenty of places to nip in for a bite to eat and a coffee in between browsing through the fantastic selection of high street names that are found on the streets and shopping centres in Newport.
